Picking the right firewood for your application is important and understanding the different types of wood will help you get the most out of your Higgins Firewood purchase. This time of year, the primary firewood use is for fireplace and heating.
There are two types of wood: hard and soft. Hardwood is the best choice for your fire as it burns hotter and longer than soft. Common hard firewood includes oak, pecan, hickory, pinion and mesquite. Soft wood comes from conifer trees such as fir and cedar which is good for kindling because it burns quickly.
Regardless of the type of wood selected, it’s important that your firewood is “seasoned” so that the moisture content remaining within each log is below 20% so that it will burn longer with even heat, less smoke and a minimum snapping and popping which can project embers away from the wood creating a fire hazard.
You can tell if firewood is seasoned by banging two logs together. If you hear a hollow sound it’s seasoned. If instead you get a dull thud, there’s still too much moisture within the logs. The surface of seasoned wood is generally a lighter gray color and can have internal cracks. Wet wood has a darker color and no cracks.
So, what kind of wood is best for you:
Seasoned Oak – Seasoned oak is the go-to wood for most fireplace applications. It burns hot and generates high quality hot coals for long-lasting fires that generate even heat. It’s great for the fireplace or fire pit.
Pecan – Pecan is another all-around good performer for heating with similar burning characteristics as oak but with the advantage of pleasantly aromatic smoke that is great for smoking meat poultry and fish. Combine it with some mesquite in your smoker for an amazing taste. In your fireplace, it will keep you warm and smell great.
Hickory – A favorite for smoking wood as it will add its unique flavor to your base wood, hickory also work well in the fireplace, generating similar amounts of heat per log as oak and pecan. It’s energy content has been compared to anthracite coal meaning it will keep you warm for a long time.
Pinion – While technically a soft wood, pinion is relatively quite hard and dense with many hardwood properties and an amazing aroma. It’s an excellent choice for your chiminea as it will keep mosquitoes and other bugs away. Add it to your regular fireplace wood to bring the fragrance of a pine forest into your living room.
Mesquite – This wood is naturally dry so it doesn’t require seasoning like other hardwoods. It burns hot like oak but with minimal popping so it’s safer to burn in a fire overnight. The distinctive fragrance from burning mesquite is a key ingredient in many smoked meats. A little can go a long way to give you exactly the taste you want from your barbecue.
Adds a robust flavor to meat, poultry and fish when grilling or smoking.
